The Toshiba TG01 is finally on sale in the UK; let’s take at this Windows Mobile superphone, and see what threats it faces in the mobile world.
Toshiba TG01
Windows Mobile has taken a lot of stick form people in the past, most notably from Apple fans, but the new Toshiba TG01 brings it up to a level that can actually compete with the iPhone 3GS. You see, the Toshiba TG01 has the two things WinMo needs to make it run really well: a powerful processor (coming in at 1GHz) and a massive screen (coming in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches). Combine that with a custom front end, as well as a 3 megapixel camera, and a custom user interface, and the Toshiba TG01 is easily the most well-featured Windows Mobile phone ever made.
Samsung i8910 HD
One major threat to the Toshiba TG01 is the Symbian-powered Samsung i8910 HD. The Samsung i8910 HD is also a touchscreen-only beast, albeit with a smaller screen, but it is still a magnificent phone. There’s a one very crucial reason for that: it’s not only got a superb 8MP camera, but it will also record video at full 720p HD resolution. That fact alone is enough to make the Samsung i8910 HD one of the hottest phones of the year, but when you fact in its sheer beauty, and one of the best screens (using AMOLED technology) ever seen on a phone, it only serves to make the Samsung i8910 HD an even more appealing prospect.
Palm Pre – the sleek one
So, representing Symbian, you have the Samsung i8910 HD, with its astonishing video capture. Flying the flag for Windows Mobile, there’s the Toshiba TG01, with astounding power and an immense screen. But we’re discussing interfaces here, and one phone beats both of these powerhouses hands down: the groundbreaking Palm Pre. You see, the Palm Pre is built on an entirely custom interface called WebOS, that is easily the slickest, most intuitive interface that’s ever been released. With intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also brings in tight integration between its apps. Book a cinema ticket on one app, and the Palm Pre automatically updates your calendar with the time. Multitask many different apps, and watch the Palm Pre run without any effort or lag. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre just cannot be beaten, whilst in terms of video, the Samsung i8910 HD wins. But in terms of raw power, the Toshiba TG01 easily takes the crown.
