Sony Ericsson Idou – the phones it will have to beat

The Sony Ericsson Idou may be one of the most anticipated phones of the year, but it’s not going to have things all its own way. Let’s take a look at the competition it will have to beat.

Sony Ericsson Idou – the basics

The Sony Ericsson Idou is garnering a lot of attention for, in the main, two big reasons. First, it’s the first phone to be announced for the UK that has a 12 megapixel camera, making it the most powerful camera phone in the country; secondly, the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first phone to use the next incarnation of the Symbian Touch OS, better known as the one that will become the Symbian Foundation open-source OS. It doesn’t just have those things in its favour, though, as the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first phone in the new Entertainment Unlimited range, which will pull in and merge together the best in camera tech, music players, video, and social networking, as well as games, into one phone. For that reason the Sony Ericsson Idou is being seen by many as the ultimate smart multimedia phone.

But what challenge will it face? What other phones will the Sony Ericsson Idou have to beat to become top dog?

Toshiba TG01 – the Windows Mobile challenger

One of the big rivals to Symbian has always been Windows Mobile, so it’s fitting that the Sony Ericsson Idou will almost definitely go up against the Toshiba TG01. The Toshiba TG01 does have a couple of key factors in its favour, notably the fastest processor on any mobile phone; the Toshiba TG01 also has the biggest screen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches (and in 800×480 pixel resolution, too). Add to that the fact that the Toshiba TG01 inherits clever screen technology from Toshiba’s range of TVs, and it makes a formidable opponent. Fortunately for the Sony Ericsson Idou, however, it only has a 3MP camera, and it’s debatable whether Windows Mobile will ever be as nice to use as Symbian. Either way, the battle between these two heavyweights should be something worth seeing!

Palm Pre – when interfaces collide

The Sony Ericsson Idou, as has been said, is powered by Symbian, but on top of that OS, it has a very sleek custom interface. That’s going to put it in the firing line of the phone that has possibly the greatest interface of any phone. The interface: WebOS; the phone: the gorgeous Palm Pre. Put simply, the Palm Pre blows both the Idou and the Toshiba TG01 out of the water, in terms of sleekness and intuitive handling. WebOS is like nothing ever seen before, and that makes the Palm Pre the most formidable phone ever, in terms of interface. In terms of other, hardware-based features, though, things aren’t so peachy, compared to the Idou. The Palm Pre has a similarly spec-ed 3MP camera to the Toshiba TG01, and it simply can’t even come close to the unimaginable power of the Sony Ericsson Idou’s camera. And in terms of music, neither the Palm Pre nor the TG01 can touch the music player on the Idou, derived from Walkman technology. So, although it will have its rivals, it seems likely the Sony Ericsson Idou is going to be one of the biggest success stories of 2009.
