We’ve barely even had the chance to enjoy the Palm pre in its full glory and already, Palm has come out with an even newer Smartphone in the market. Now, it’s time for us to welcome the upcoming Palm Pixi – a sort of downgraded, downsized version of the Pre.
With a smaller frame and less features, the Pixi will come at a cheaper price than its predecessor, obviously targeting the entry level Smartphone market segment. Here’s a look at how the new Pixi will fare against the highly successful Palm Pre.
The Look
As mentioned earlier, the Pixi is a scaled back version of the Pre – quite literally when it comes to the physical aspects of the device. The Pixi will have the dimensions of 111 x 55 x 10.9 mm, as compared to the Pre’s 100.5 x 59.5 x 16.9 mm dimensions. The fixed QWERTY keyboard on the Pixi means that the device will be lengthier than the Pre, but is much thinner as there is no need to accommodate the slide out keypad. Overall, the Pixi is also much lighter at only 99.5 grams as opposed to the Pre’s 133-gram weight.
The Features
As you’d expect, the features on the Pixi are also downgraded version of the ones found in the Pre. For instance, the touch screen display has been downsized to 2.63 inches from the Pre’s 3.1-inch display. This means that the resolution has also gone down – from 16 M colours to 256 K, and from 320 x 480 pixels down to 320 x 400.
One of the biggest disappointments on the Pixi is the absence of Wi-Fi connectivity. Users will no longer be able to access the internet via WLAN, which is definitely a crucial feature on all Smartphones. The Pixi’s camera has also been downgraded to a 2-Megapixel version from a functional 3.15-Megapixel snapper on the Pre.
The Price Tag
The main feature of the Pixi is that it pretty much delivers the features of the Palm Pre, only at a more affordable price. On higher tariffs, you could get the Pre for around £50 – £100, depending on your monthly contract. Once it becomes available late this year or early next year, we’re predicting that you could get the Palm Pixi for free on the same tariffs mentioned above. For pay-as-you-go customers, the Pre retails for around £330 while the Pixi should be available for more or less £300 once it is launched.
