For many, the iPhone is the high water mark of what mobile phones should be, a phone that no others can touch. But with the new iPhone 3.0 OS due to be unveiled, let’s look at the competition, and see if it has, in fact, caught up…
Palm Pre – out iPhone-ing the iPhone
The iPhone is most often praised for its interface, with fans of the touchscreen device saying that nothing in the world can touch it. In terms of features, that’s not true, as many phones outclass it, but in terms of interface, the fans do have something of a point. The interface on the iPhone is great, but it’s about to be beaten at its own game by the stunning Palm Pre. This takes the concept of touch controls to a whole new level, with smooth flowing menus, and gesture controls for just about EVERY action on the Palm Pre. Not only that, but it features true multitasking, with apps running shown as a series of real-time ‘cards’ on the screen. Want to close an app, then you use gesture controls, and simply fling the card off the top of the screen. It really is a whole new way to interact with your phone.
However, the Palm Pre is content with having just a fluid operating system. It’s clever, too, letting you do time-saving tricks like typing whatever it is you want, whether it be the Bluetooth controls, a song in your collection, or even a band you want to find out more about through Google. You just type, and the Palm Pre brings up all the options, from within your apps, your music collection,, your videos, or even the web. Add to that the close synergy between different apps, with for example, your contacts pulling contact information from different sources (Gmail, Facebook etc), and putting them all together, so that each person only has ONUE contact entry, with all their details on it. It’s things like that which make the Palm Pre the most exciting interface of the year…
Sony Ericsson Idou – the best touchscreen phone in the world?
…Or should that be the second most exciting thing of the year, because there’s a phone that isn’t far off the Palm Pre, in terms of interface, but utterly destroy sit in terms of power. Announced at the Mobile World Congress, it’s the Sony Ericsson Idou, and it’s the first phone to feature what will become the new Symbian Foundation OS. You get touch controls, you get software expandability, and more importantly, the Sony Ericsson Idou has a bespoke interface on top of Symbian, so you get an incredible, rich user experience. But all of that, important as it is, pales next to its big, killer feature: the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first phone announced for the UK to have a huge TWELVE megapixel camera. In short, it’s the best camera phone on the planet, and with that shiny new Symbian OS, it may well be the most user-friendly one, too! With the announcement of iPhone 3.0, the new version of Apple’s OS, we can expect to see a new iPhone this year, but the fact is… well, on the evidence of these two phones alone, it really has its work cut out for it!
