With the Mobile World Congress currently wowing crowds in Barcelona, one fact is increasingly becoming clear: the modern breed of mobile phones needs to have an intuitive interface, to wow consumers. So, let’s take a look at three of the best: the Toshiba TG01, the Palm Pre, and the astonishing Sony Ericsson Idou.
Toshiba TG01 – taking Windows Mobile to new levels
Announced before MWC, the Toshiba TG01 is nonetheless making a starring appearance at the show. With the incredible specs of the phone it’s easy to see why, as well. Not only does it have the biggest screen of any mobile phones on the market, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the fastest processor, too, coming in at over 1GHz. That puts it firmly in ‘laptop-power’ territory, but with the standard WinMo interface, it would still be a clunky experience. Luckily, it doesn’t rely on the standard WinMo interface, instead using a bespoke 3D interface, custom designed for the Toshiba TG01. Best described as a series of revolving panels, it has a Venetian blind feel to it, with left and right swipes of the finger revealing different shortcuts and apps, as the 3D strips revolve in an incredibly smooth and fluid way. It really is a joy to use, and that’s the reason why, as well as being the most powerful Windows Mobile phone to date, it’s one of the nicest to use!
Palm Pre – new-ness personified
When the Palm Pre was announced, many people immediately compared it to the iPhone, due to its fluid menus, intuitive operating system, and sleek design. However, that’s an unfair comparison. Not unfair on the Pre. Unfair on the iPhone, because quite frankly, the Palm Pre leaves it for dead! The interface is truly like nothing we’ve ever seen before, with full swipe and gesture control, and a touchscreen that actually extends beyond the screen itself. The experience of using the Palm Pre is like no other, with a fluidity and interconnectedness you just won’t fin on other mobile phones.
Sony Ericsson Idou – Entertainment Unlimited
As good as the Toshiba TG01 and the Palm Pre are, however, the real star of the show at this year’s MWC has been a new touchscreen phone from Sony Ericsson, and it truly is a beast. The interface in the Sony Ericsson Idou is what will evolve into the Symbian Foundation software (effectively, it’s Symbian S60 Touch, as used in the Nokia 5800), with a custom Sony Ericsson interface on top. And what an interface it is, with smooth, fluid finger controls, and instant access to your media and important apps. However, the Sony Ericsson Idou fuses that interface to much more power than the Palm Pre, as it’s also the first 12 megapixel phone to be announced in Europe. In essence, the Idou combines a truly sumptuous operating system, with a truly magnificent camera… and if that isn’t enough to make it the phone of the year, I don’t know what is!
