The same reason I want 5 applications running on my computer at the same time. When I leave home, I want my phone to be as much like my computer as possible.
I need to copy information from an email to paste in the web browser to search Google, or copy text from a webpage to search the “App Catalog” or take a picture to send in an email, while uploading it to Flickr to post on MySpace and Twitter.
I multi-task a lot on my computer. Why wouldn’t I want 5 applications open at once?!

i love my palm pre what palm did is really amazing ive gotten 21 apps open b4 it warned me i couldn do it no more and i ran them all for bout 2 hrs 30 mins before it died and i was using the internet and gps. on my iphone 3gs i couldn even think bout using the gps with the internet at the same time just would never happen but the pre rules over 3gs anyday and i have both so go all the way until it tells u to stop

….. and the batteries dead. ha i got one too and when you have just a few apps open it KILLS the battery. sucks
thats why i love my pre its amazing what it can accomplish, it has its few things that it needs like video recording and visual voicemail but thats something that will come with updates and is not a big deal and virtual keyboard would also be a good option.

I have had my pre since launch day and love it a lot. Excellent replacement for my 755p and I still save a bunch of my plan after corp discount. compared to other providers.
The Pre is able to play video but it isn’t video camera capable yet… Palm announced it will be a software update in the future.

There is no question, the Palm Pre has a great OS and the ability to Multi-task could come in handy for some people in certain circumstances. It would be really nice to be able to play streaming music on the iPhone in the background!
I think you misinterpreted what JHVH1 was trying to say. He was just postulating if it were possible to run more apps if some system memory could be offloaded to secondary storage. My guess would be yes, but it’d probably be a lot slower to load and would take a toll on the card’s memory cells with all the write operations it takes to swap memory.
I’ve gotten up to 14..but i had both GPS apps running…Google map and Sprint Nav… WebOS just couldn’t take it anymore…but WOW 17 apps…Let’s see Mr. “3G S” do that !!!

There was no behind the scenes magic here. I’m too really amazed at what the Pre can achieve.
I wonder if you went into the linux shell and increased virtual memory using the flash as swap space if you could add more.
I like how the music didn’t even skip when you kept adding apps.
