PDA turned mobile phone manufacturer Palm has recently announced their intentions to launch their follow-up to the highly coveted Palm Pre within the next few months. Hoping to build on the undeniable success of its predecessor is the upcoming Palm Pixi. As compared to the Pre, the Pixi has been designed for a younger target market which is made evident by its more casual design. Nonetheless, it still exudes that same Smartphone elegance that has made the Pre so popular among all types of consumers. Here’s a quick look at Palm’s newest Smartphone.
The Basics
The Pixi will originally come in the usual sleek black finish, but the Pixi Artist Series will also be an option for the more adventurous consumers out there. Available are 5 different outrageous designs that are definitely not for the business types. However, it’s an excellent change of pace type of choice for the younger audience the Pixi intends to break through.
Mobile Phone Specifications
As a mobile phone, the Pixi will function as a tri band 3G device (HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100), and a quad band mobile over the 2G network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900). The internal memory on the device is acceptable at 8 GB, but the lack of a microSD slot for additional external memory might be a turn off for more than just a few consumers.
Similar to the Palm Pre, the Pixi will also be equipped with the Palm webOS which has garnered relatively positive reviews in the past. Under the hood is a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor (complete with a dedicated graphics accelerator) which will be more than capable of running all the applications on the device without any problems.
The biggest letdown of the Pixi is that it has decided to forgo Wi-Fi capability. This crucial feature is one of the victims of numerous downgrades which will allow this device to have a much lower retail price than its predecessor. The mobile’s camera is also rather unimpressive at only 2 Megapixels. Although it does have a flash feature on board, don’t expect to capture high quality images on this Smartphone.
Final Word
Looks-wise, the Palm Pixi is definitely a head turner – especially if you go for one of the Artist Series editions. The QWERTY keyboard is a notable addition and the price cut will definitely be welcomed by a still struggling economy. Nonetheless, we don’t know how this will fare in the market and how it will compete with other Smartphones simply because of the absence of Wi-Fi on the device.
