2009 – the year of the smartphone

Let’s take a look at the top three phones which are vying for the title of best smartphone of 2009.

Palm Pre

There’s a new kind on the block, that aims to take the smartphone crown all for itself. The Nokia N97 goes for raw power, but what the new Palm Pre goes for is sheer elegance. Using the brand new, never-before-seen WebOS at its core, the Palm Pre takes touch-friendly interfaces and innovative design to an entirely new level. Take, for example, the new Fandango app that should be available when the Palm Pre is launched. It’s an online cinema booking service, that lets you buy tickets and watch trailers on the phone. The Palm Pre will also put an automatic reminder in your calendar, and contact people who are going with you, to organise getting there. That’s what makes the Palm Pre great.

Toshiba TG01

There’s little doubt that Windows Mobile is one of the big operating systems in the world. However, to get the best out of it, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top, not unlike the Sony Ericsson X1 or HTC’s range of handset. Well now, there’s a new kid in town, called the Toshiba TG01, and it fulfils all three of those criteria. Not only that, but as well as the custom interface, it has the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the fastest processor, coming in at 4.1 inches, and 1GHz, respectively. The Toshiba TG01 is quite simply the most powerful Windows Mobile phone out there…

Samsung i8910 HD

On the one hand, there’s the Palm Pre, with its awesome WebOS interface. And on the other, there’s the Toshiba TG01, with bags of processing power. But from Samsung comes a first in the world of mobile phones, with the Samsung i8910 HD. It’s not the first 8MP phone to have a touchscreen, or to use the TouchWiz UI, but it is the only phone in the entire world that will record true HD video at 720p resolution. So, in essence, the Samsung i8910 HD doesn’t just give you an incredible stills camera, it also becomes a proper, HD camcorder. A lot of people have also speculated why the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. Could the Samsung i8910 HD be the first HD Youtube phone? It’s not being marketed as that (so far), but it’s a compelling thought, nonetheless. Imagine grabbing a video in pin-sharp HD, then directly uploading it to Youtube, at speeds comparable to home broadband. The Samsung i8910 HD can do that!
